NEW YORK, NY: David Nor man Dinkins, 62, the Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City was a closely contested race by a margin of 51% to 48% defeating his Republican rival Rudolph Giuliani to become the 106th Mayor of the largest City in the nation. His victory was shared by Sikhs who had supported him in every step of the campaign.

Inderjit Singh, a Sikh who is the Director of Department of Employment Services in the City, was a member of his Finance Committee since the beginning of the campaign.

Sikhs were prominent at a fund raising dinner by the “Asian Americans for David Dinkins”. In the honor of the Democratic Mayoral candidate on October 18.

As David Dinkins addressed the fund raising dinner, he was flanked by a number of community leaders who included Inderjit Singh and Jagjit Singh Mangat, the President of Sikh Cultural Society, Inderjit Singh, as a member of the Finance Committee, had earlier spoken to the audience and hailed David Dinkins as the Mayor who would be sensitive to the needs of the minorities and who was eminently qualified for the tough job of running the city.

Addressing the gathering Dinkins promised a greater role to the Asian American Community in his administration. He also spoke on a number of issues which were of particular concern to the audience.

A large number of Sikhs, many members of the Sikh Cultural Society executive, including Dr. Satnam Singh Dhami, Rabinder Singh Bhamra, Harpreet Singh Toor and Tarlochan Singh Sethi had attended the function.

Jagjit Singh Mangat, the Presi dent of Sikh Cultural Society told WSN that he was delighted with David Dinkins election as the mayor, and was very happy the increasing participation of the community in local politics. “We hope that we will have a voice of the Sikhs in the city government,” he added.
