The Sikhs were exhorted to remain pure amidst the impunities of the world merely in the role of householders. As the Sikhs were to live as householders, earning their bread by honest means, they were encouraged to develop agriculture and trade and share their income with the needy. After completing his udasis, Baba Nanak settled down as a householder and farmer, although he could have lived lavishly on the offerings of his followers.
