NEW DELHI: The pro Congress1 faction of the workers union of Indian Express has decided to go on strike Nov. 9th, the union leaders were won over by the Ruling Cong-1 in lieu of inducements.
In 1987 also, the Indian Ex press, New Delhi remained closed for almost 2 months. The strike then was engineered by Nagarajan President of the union at the behest of Rajiv Gandhi.
In recent weeks, damaging revelations were carried by the Indian Express linking Rajiv Gandhi to Bofors kickbacks.
After unsuccessfully trying to stop the publications of damaging reports, Rajiv Gandhi is said to have timed the order of closing down of the Indian Express days before the critical Parliamentary elections, through a strike.
In India the television and radio is directly under the government control. Last week another newspaper “Hindu” was asked to stop carrying reports about Bofors corruption. The newspaper compiled however, the assistant editor N. Ram released those documents to other newspapers when his own editor Kasturi refused to publish those reports.
