AHMEDABAD: The ruling Congress (I) party in Gujarat is facing a political crisis with the resignation of a senior most minister in the Chaudhary cabinet Vijaydas Mahant and protest over the selection of some party candidates for the forthcoming elections to Parliament, reports PTI.
Mahant is reported to have submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaud hary, protesting over the re nomination of sitting member from Junagadh Mohanbhai Patel despite his opposition to it.
Mahant, who hails from Kutitana assembly constituency in Junagadh district, has, however, expressed his desire to work for the party and its candidate,
Meanwhile, his strong supporter Bharat Odedka, who is also contesting from Porbandar, has supported Mahant’s demand and. has reportedly rejected a party ticket, offered to him.
In yet another development in Rajkot, two senior party leaders Vallabhbhai Patel, health minister, and Manoharsinh Jadeja, chairman of the Gujarat industrial development corporation have also expressed their resentment over the selection of a sitting member from Rajkot Ramaben Mavani, and threatened to quit.
In Himatnagar, a large number of party workers led by district party president Ambalal Upadhyaya and a sitting member of legislative assembly Upendra Trivedi, assembled there to protest against party candidate Taruna Gurjar, a Youth Congress-I leader.
