CHANDIGARH: TPS. Puri, 47yearold chief badminton coach at the national Institute of Sports has won international recognition. He has been chosen by the International Badminton Federation to conduct a training ‘course for top coaches from the Americas and the Caribbean’s.
‘The IBF course will start at Guatemala City (Guatemala), Twenty-four ‘coaches from all countries in South ‘America and North America and the Caribbean’s will attend the course and T.P.S .Puri will teach they advanced ‘methods of training,
The L.B.F.’s idea is to improve the standards of badminton in the Americas so that countries of the two continents can rub shoulders with the best in the world, For several decades now Asian countries notably China and Indonesia, and to a lesser extent South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and India have been dominating international men’s badminton with stray option coming Denmark and England.
The US.A. did dominate world ‘badminton in women’s section and ‘won the Uber Cup in 195657, 195960 and 196263. But they too have slipped as Japan, Indonesia, and China and now South Korea began asserting their claim to top honors, making use of TPS. Puri’s Guatemala assignment, the U.S. Badminton Association quickly roped in the Indian national coach, Puri has strong credentials. He joined the NIIS. In February, 1966, and then secured a postgraduate certificate in coaching from the Federal Republic to Germany. He has attended a number of international ‘Coaching clinics and presented papers of advanced methods of training. He has been the national coach with the Badminton Association of India for 12 ‘years. He has coached the national ‘cams for the World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, Asian Badminton Confederation Champion ships and such international competitions as the All England Open and ‘Swedish Open Championships.
He has been instrumental in the phenomenal rise of Parkash Padukone and guided Syed Modi, Ami Ghia and Kanwal ThakurSingh i various international competitions.
ZAKHAREVICH, Czechoslovakia: Yuri Zakharevich of the ‘Soviet Union scored a double triumph on Sunday by winning the 110 kg heavyweight division at the World Weightlifting championships and bettering his own world record in the snatch.
The 25yearold student lifted 203 kg on his second attempt championships in Rheims, France, in May.
