ADELAIDE, Australia: England survived a desperate Australian attempt at a major breakthrough and lost only one wicket in morning play on the fourth day of the third cricket test.
At lunch, England were 403 for six with night watchman John Emburey on 34 and Jack Richards 23.
James Whitaker, making his test debut, was dismissed for only 11 when he was caught at mid off by Greg Mathews off Bruce Reid.
England had resumed on the overnight 349 for five, trailing by 165 Australia’s first innings declaration of 514 for five.
Australian Captain Allan Border persevered with his pace attack in the first hour. Mery Hughes’ nine overs cost only 10 runs and he had all batsmen in difficulties.
SCORES: Australia 514 for five declared. England 409 for six (Chris Broad 116, Mike Gatting 100, Bill Athey 55, Bruce Reid two for 55).
