NEW DELHI, India: Police fired tear gas today to prevent Hindu demonstrators storming the Chinese Embassy in protest at alleged Chinese military incursions into territory claimed by India.
More than 500 members of the orthodox Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party charged the gates of the Embassy compound but were beaten back by riot police using batons and tear gas. More than 100 people were arrested.
India accused China last week of building a helicopter landing pad in an area it claims as part of its northeast Himalayan State of Arunchal Pradesh.
The two countries, which went to war in 1962 over their longstanding border dispute, held in conclusive talks in Peking last month in an effort to resolve the issue.
