One person was fatally stabbed and 16 others injured in stone throwing and stabbing incidents as clashes broke out between groups belonging to two communities at Balangar town near Bidkin in Marathwada District of the Western Indian State of Maharashrta.
The trouble arose when some people objected to the playing of a band by a group of processionists celebrating the Hindu Dussera festival near a temple, police said.
Twentyeight persons, including two policemen, were injured at Aundha Nagnath of Parbhani district in mob violence and the subsequent police batoncharge following the stoning of a pro cession.
Police said 84 persons were arrested and battalions of para military forces and additional police reinforcements were rushed to the area.
Meanwhile, the Hindu fundamentalist Shiv Sena and its ally, rightwing Bhartiya Janata Party gave a strike call for Thursday in protest against the violent incidents.
