Guru Nanak Dev Ji is not an ordinary child. From childhood he did fascinating activities. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father’s name was Mehta Kalu. Mehta Kalu had an important position as the town’s revenue official. Mehta Kalu first wanted him to become a trader, so he sent Guru Nanak Dev Ji to a town with his trusted assistants. Mehta Kalu advised his son to make “a good profitable bargain” so Guru Nanak Dev Ji could start a shop. On the way to town they met some Sadhus. The Sadhus hadn’t eaten for several days. Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to town and bought rice and grain for the Sadhus. He gave the food to the Sadhus and said that there was food to last them for months. When he told his father what he had done, his father got mad, but his sister, Nanaki, defended her brother.

Moral: If you’re rich, you should give some money to the poor.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi in 1469. The town is now called Nankana Sahib.
