CHICAGO: The Sikh community of Chicago and Milwaukee areas organized a family picnic on Saturday August 26, 1989 in the adjoining park the Sikh Temple Palatine. This rare and exciting function was sponsored by the management committee of the Sikh Temple. The occasion attracted a large number of Sikh families of the area, projecting the memories of an old Waisakhi Festival of Punjab. The finely happy and joyful mood of the participants was visible from their total participation in every event organized during the day long festivities. To the happy surprise of this correspondent this occasion provided fun and sports to the participants besides the touching scenes of oneness in the Sikh community. The atmosphere was cheerful and peaceful and there was absolutely no sign of consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The events included interesting items like egg competition, musical chairs, races for different age tug war, volleyball and some races.
Before the prize two amateur artistes presented so distribution me cultural items, which won the hearts of the participants.
Before the close of the function the prizes to the winners were given away by a respected elder person. Baba Kartar Singh Dhaliwal father of S. Darsharn Singh Dhaliwal a top philanthropist of the area. S. Darsharn Singh Dhaliwal also donated a cash prize of $300.00 to the Chicago volleyball teams.
- Kartar Singh Kochhar, S. Kanwar Jit Singh Chhatwal and S. Harjap Singh Sangha provided liberal donations I arranging the delicious and rich food for the Participants.
The credit for arranging this interesting event goes to the management committee of the Sikh temple its president S. Lakhwant Singh Komal, its social secretary S. Rajinder Bir Singh Mago, Baltej Singh Kahlon, Toni Sanghera and other dedicated workers.
