COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan military officials said that Indian peacekeeping troops killed 70 people in weekend offensives on ethnic Tamil rebels in northern areas. Twenty nine other people, including a Buddhist monk died Friday and Saturday in Sinhalese radical violence elsewhere. An Indian Embassy official confirmed the military offensive but said only three Tamil rebels were killed in two days.
