Special To WSN WINNIPEG: Sikhs of Winnipeg joined thousands of other marchers in a peace rally in Winnipeg on a warm Saturday afternoon in June. This rally is an annual event held in Winnipeg for the last 10 years. Sikhs joined the march mainly to show their support for the peace movement; which is so important to them at this time of violence and turmoil in their own homeland.
Winnipeg is located in the middle of Canada about 150 km North of North Dakota. It has Sikh population of about 8,000, with five Gurdwaras. Members of all the Gurdwaras were present at the rally. Included in the march was Dr. Gulzar Singh Cheema, He is a member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly (similar to State Congressman in U.S.).
After the march Sikhs set up 2 booth to provide free refreshments to the thirsty marchers. This was greatly appreciated by everyone and Sikh organizations were encouraged to continue this unique service next year.
