By A Staff Writer BANGALORE: A large number Of so called untouchables are converting to Sikhism because of it egalitarian philosophy.
An article in the Dalit Voice, a magazine of the so called untouchables, on the mass conversation of untouchables to Sikhism in Western ULP., said:
“It began on November 27 last year when 50 Dalits of Nanglehareru village, 35 kms from Meerut, embraced Sikhism. On Jan. 26, Dalits in 42 hamlets around Nanglehareru went over to Sikhism. Because, seeing is believing. Sikhism is a military religion, It not only transforms the mental make up of the oppressed but offers them a new look with a beard and turban. Over and above that it empowers a Sikh to carry a sword, The mere sight of a Sikh Carrying a sword makes the upper caste bullies run away. The entire problem of Punjab today is be cause the sawarn Hindus hate the Sikhs with their air of superiority and pride armed with swords: This has caught the imagination of Dalits and hundreds of them are rushing to seek shelter under Sikhism around Meerut. The last of these spate of conversions took place on May 28 in Hapur where 150 Dalits embraced Sikhism. The greatest advantage of professing Sikhism is that it does not take away the reservations. (Dalit Liberation though Sikhism, DV Sept 1, 1988 p7) We want our readers in Western UP and around Delhi to visit these areas and see for themselves the latest miracle brought by Sikhism.”
