From News Dispaches KULU: Janata Dal leader V.P. Singh today asked the Centre to follow a policy of firmness and fairness while dealing with the situation in Punjab.

Talking to newsmen during his visit to the valley he said the Government must stop playing games. People had seen through its policies. The Government did not highlight positive aspects of the Punjab situation like the absence of mob violence.

He pleaded for a massive campaign and the restoration of the political process in the State. It was a blunder to blow up the political channel by dismissing the Barnala Government.

Singh said the panchayat elections would not serve any purpose. It appeared to be a diversionary tactic.

Asked if his party would have the Akalis as their allies in the coming elections, he said there was no such proposal. “We are more concerned about solving the Punjab problem,” he added.

He criticized the USA for its trade policy toward India. He apprehended that the USA was trying to force India to open its markets to American capital.

Talking about Sri Lanka he said he was anguished over the humiliation of the country and the manner in which the IPKF was being kicked out of the island.
