ROPAR: The local court today issued notice to the State Government to disclose how and where the ashes of Charanjit Singh Channi were immersed.
The State was also asked to reveal who immersed the ashes and the name for the priest in whose presence the ceremony was. performed.
Channi said to be a top freedom fighter was allegedly shot dead in a “fake encounter” by the police on June 2 near Parole in this district.
On June 3 Dev Raj Singh Talwandi father of the deceased moved an application here that the ashes of Channi should be handed over to his family.
After hearing the application the court had issued directions to the district police not to dispose of the mortal remains and personal belongings of Channi without permission.
The State submitted in the court on June 5 that the ashes were immersed before the stay order was issued. Following this Talwandi moved another application for summoning the record of the Municipal Committee to which the body of Channi was handed over as unidentified after a post mortem examination for cremation.
A Municipal Committee representative while deposing stated that the body was handed over on. June 2 at 2:30 pm and the same. ‘was cremated at about 5 pm. It also stated that the committee had no knowledge who took the mortal remains of the deceased.
It was also stated that the police made no application to the committee to get the ashes and the police could not take the mortal remains as these were to be handed over to the legal heirs of the deceased.
The state has been asked by the court to file a reply on June 12.
