COLOMBO: At least 16 persons including an Indian Army Major, have died in fresh violence involving Tamil guerrillas in northern Sri Lanka officials and rebel sources here said on Wednesday.
LTTE fighters killed a Major and another soldier in a gun battle in Vadarawatte village on Tuesday, rebel sources said.
Two LTTE men and eight civilians perished when rampaging troops torched some 10 houses immediately after the firefight.
Indian officials here said four more LTTE men were shot dead near the Kodikramam area on Tuesday.
Thousands of Sinhalese school children took to the streets here demanding the immediate withdrawal of the IPKF. Simultaneously a group of Tamil students demonstrated in Batticoloa asking the Indian soldiers to remain, witnesses said, Meanwhile the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said India and Sri Lanka had agreed that consultations will continue so that conditions can be created as envisaged in the Indo Sri Lanka agreement to facilitate the IPKF’s with.
