CHANDIGARH: A well-known freedom fighter Charanjit Singh Chani who was very close to the two Panthic Committees was killed in Ropar District on June 2. An official spokesman said that in an encounter security forces Charanjit Singh of Khalistan Commando Force near the Bhakra main line canal ropar District. Charanjit singh Channi was a nephew of Jagdev Singh Talwandi President of unified Akali Dal (L) Jagdey Singh Talwandi after Chani’s death regretted saying Charanjit Singh Channi was not the only one killed in fake encounters, hundreds of youths have been killed Jagdev Singh said. Fake encounter of youth was a complicate matter. Earlier however close relations and friends of Channi had met Jagdev Singh Talwandi asking him to intervene so that police may not kill Channi in a fake encounter. As widely reported Channi was arrested a day earlier at Mohali and news of his arrest was spread all over thestate. Ludhiana sent a telegram to Punjab government telling of their apprehension of police killing Channi in a fake encounter. Punjab Sikh Lawyers also sent a similar telegram to the governor and chief justice of Haryana High Court.

But Jagdev Singh Talwandi reportedly did not move probably because of Channi’s opposition to Akali Dal (L) and attack on Jagdey Singh.

It may be added that Bir Devinder Singh Congress (I) M.L.A. of Punjab disclosed to friends and relatives of Channi that Jagdey Singh referring to Channi said in his presence to Congress 1 members that “you can’t eliminate one small kid even.”
