From News Dispaches SRINAGAR: The security authorities here have been alerted against possible acts of sabotage by Kashmiri militants at sensitive government installations including the Srinagar station of Doordarshan Radio Kashmir and the Jawaharlal tunnel connecting with the Jammu region through the Pir panjal mountain ridge.

Sources said the Centre had learnt through its various intelligence agencies that the Kashmiri militants responsible for the spurt in violence and anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir over the past 10 months were now planning to strike at sensitive installations instead of going in for hartals and street demonstrations.

In the past few months, attempts have been made to blow up the Radio Kashmir building on Residency Road. Extremists planted a powerful pencil bomb within the complex in autumn last year. Similar attempts were made at the central telegraph office and the Press Information Bureau in the city.

The extremist’s plan to blow up both the lanes of the Jawaharlal tunnel seems to be aimed at disrupting communications as the Srinagar Jammu highway of which the tunnel constitutes a part is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the forward areas and the rest of the country. Security along the highway has been stepped up with each and every vehicle being thoroughly searched before being allowed to cross the tunnel.

In view of these threats security arrangements have been strengthened and a warning has been issued by Muslim conference that they will take retaliating action in Azad Kashmir if the extremists did not stop their violent activities.
