CHANDIGARH: The continuing attempt of India to establish its hedgemony over Sri Lanka has already cost the lives of 125 officers and other ranks from Punjab most of them Sikhs.

Brig. Kuldeep Singh Kang, director of the Punjab Sanik Welfare Board told newsmen that the state government had decided to give free education to the wards of these soldiers. Numerous medals including the Vir Chakras have been awarded to these soldiers.

A total of 857 soldiers have been killed 3,093 have been injured according to official figures (W.S.N May 5) and India has spent over Rs 12,000 crores on maintaining its army in Sri Lanka.

Latest reports indicate that the peace talks between Tamil Tigers (who were originally armed and trained in India) and Sri Lankan authorities are progressing. Both sides are stressing for the early withdrawal of the Indian Army from Sri Lanka.
