SRINAGAR: Strict restrictions were imposed on the movement of people on Naiaimaar Road in the interior of the city after what police said were suspected militants opened fire near the Fateh Kadal area today. One person is said to have received injuries.
As the third day of the four day Kashmir bandh (work stopage) started it was marked by a bomb blast in a showroom of a carpet businessman at Saida Kadal in Rainawari. A wall of the showroom was damaged. Reports said that the owner of the showroom had kept his business establishment open yesterday in spite for the call to keep it closed.
A group of militants indulged in wantoon shooting at Fateh Kadal and ran away when the police opened fire. This was following by checking of vehicles on the outskirts of the city. The Fateh Kadal area as virtually cordoned off and Section 144, CRPC, probhiting any gathering of five or more people) was strictly enforced and it was almost undeclared curfew in the area. Apparently to prevent militants from taking cover of groups of people and indulge in firing as was done yesterday.
Volley of Bullets
Police sources said that the militants who had fired a volley of bullets on a passenger transport bus at Mageam village on the Sunagar Tangmarg road and in which six persons including two women were injured had been identified. The police combed the village and its adjoining areas. The driver of the bus who despite receiving a bullet wound sped away the bus and saved the passengers. The State Government has decided to suitably reward the driver.
The transport services plied normally in the Civil lines area and on: some district routes. Srinagar city and four other major towns of Anantnag Sopon Baramulla, and Budgam continued to observe the hartal.
