SANGRUR: A.R. Darshi, Addison Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) has offered himself for “public auction at a place to be decided by the authorities.”
Narrating the events that led him to make this offer, Darshi said he was posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) at Ludhiana, from where he was transferred to Sangrur in June, 1988, He was provided with rent-free official accommodation at Ludhiana. He is still occupying that house as he has not been given rent free house here.
Darshi says one of his daughters aged 16 is deaf and dumb and has been attending a school for such persons at Ludhiana. So under the circumstances it is not possible for him to vacate the house. However, the PWD (B and R) authorities have assessed the market rent of the Ludhiana house and have sought the recovery of more than Rs 1.5 lakh from him. The market rent has been assessed at over Rs 20,000 per month. Darshi says that as his monthly salary is about Rs 5,000 he is in no position to pay this large amount. The only way left for him to offer himself for “sale through auction.”
