TEHRAN, Reuter: Iran has rejected a resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council calling for a ceasefire Iraq, Tehran Radio reported.
It broadcast a statement from the foreign ministry calling the resolution, adopted unanimously last night, “A useless effort by the Council and the supporters of Iraq to help this aggressive and desperate regime”.
It said the resolution evaded the question of aggression and refrained from taking a position against “repeated and consistent breaches of humanitarian and international regulations, such as use of chemical weapons, by Iraq”.
Last night’s unanimous resolution, the seventh by the Council since the gulf war broke out in 1980, called on both sides to implement a previous Council resolution adopted in February.
‘That resolution called for a ceasefire, withdrawal of troops to internationally recognized borders and a comprehensive exchange of prisoners of war. It urged the two parties to settle all aspects of their conflict peacefully.
“Any attempt to end the war, including by the Security Council, can be successful only if and when it is based on condemnation and punishment of the aggressor”, Iranian statement said.
