The Reagan administration said that it endorsed a 200 million dollar emergency aid package for the Philippines approved with rare speed by the House of Representatives but the Senate is unlikely to act on the aid until next week.
“We welcome the House action to provide additional support for President (Corazon) Aquino” White House spokesman Larry Speaks told reporters. Aquino whose government is undertaking widespread economic military and political reforms bas indicated to us the money will be helpful” he said.
He added that the administration would try to negotiate with Congress over where the funding would come from.
Earlier a state department spokesman told Reuters his department also backed the bill.
