KARACHI Reuter: Pakistani opposition leaders argued into the late hours over a strategy to force President Mohammad Zia ul Haq to call new elections.
A senior opposition figure told Reuter’s leaders of the 10 party movements for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) Alliance had failed to reach agreement at three sometimes stormy sessions over the past two days.
A fourth round of talks was being held late night.
The source said one proposal discussed was to hold a huge rally in front of the parliament building in Islamabad.
But some of the alliance members disagreed and no decision was taken.
Other opposition sources said another proposal was for is in all the country’s major cities.
Benazir Bhutto the most prominent opposition leader drew crowds of hundreds of thousands at six rallies in different Pakistani cities on her return from voluntary exile in April
The MRD boycotted elections in February 1985 held before the lifting of martial law and with parties banned and has been campaigning for new polls ever since.
The government maintains that the 1985 election which brought Prime Minister Mohammad Khan Junejo to power are valid and another will not be held until 1990.
