NEW DELHI: Dr Manmohan Singh, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been appointed advisor to the prime minister on economic affairs, it was officially announced here Dec 7.
Dr Singh, who also held key positions in the government including that of finance secretary and deputy chairman of the planning commission, will have the status of a cabinet minister.
Till recently, Dr Singh was the secretary general of the Geneva based south commission. ‘As the secretary general of the south commission, Dr Singh played an important role in the finalization of a report that would form the strengthening of South economic cooperation and lead to the formation of a development strategy in the context of a new international economic adviser to what was then the ministry of foreign trade.
