GURDASPUR: The district administration imposed curfew restrictions in Gurdaspur town after members of the Sikh Students Federation and Hindu Shiv Sena confronted head on. The clashes started when hundreds of Sikh students took out a protest demonstration: against the killing of a Sikh leader Sarbjit Singh by the Indian security forces and members of the Hindu Shiy Sena opposed the demonstration and asked the Hindu shopkeepers not to close their shops. Khushal Behal, a former Congress (I) leader, tried in vain to bring about peace between the closing groups and in the process he himself was injured.

The police reinforcement’s lathi charged the youths and fired in the air to drive away the clashing youths.
