NEW DELHI: Prime Minister V.P. Singh, said New Delhi’s policy of reserving 27 per cent posts available in central government Offices for the backward classes would only be implemented in those states where quotas in state government jobs already exist.
In an interview Singh said states would not be forced to implement the recommendations made by the. Mandal commission on job reservations for the backward classes and the centre would respect the decision taken by them in this Regard.
He clarified that reservations would only be for jobs and not promotions,
The Prime Minister said the people opposed to the reservation policy had not read the Mandal commission notification.
“The reservations are not for any particular caste as some castes listed as backward in one state are not listed so in another,” he said,
Singh clarified that the center had included economically weaker sections of Muslims in the reservation list.
He accused the opposition parties of misleading people on the government’s reservation notification.
“The center’s steps are not new as reservations for the backward classes have been made in the past by several state governments,” he said.
