CHANDIGARH: Sikh militants killed Sawan Singh, a member of the apex body governing affairs of Sikh temples (SGPC), and six other people since Monday night while security forces shot dead four militants and arrested four of them.

Akali leader Sawan Singh was shot dead at his residence in Rajpura town of Patiala district early Tuesday, according to information received by the SGPC here.

A close associate of SGPC president G S Tohra, Sant Sawan Singh, 70, is the tenth SGPC member to be gunned down.

Four unidentified men were killed in an encounter with security forces near Verka on the outskirts of Amnitsar early Sept 4. Three .303 rifles and one Mauzer pistol with a large quantity of ammunition were recovered from the spot
