NEW DELHI: India is opposed to any unilateral armed action in the gulf and ruled out any induction of its forces in the troubled region, Prime Minister Singh said here Saturday.

Stressing that the situation in the Gulf was causing great anxiety to India, Singh said an armed action by the U S and its allies—would violate the U N charter.

Asked about the Iraqi intervention in Kuwait, Singh said India was opposed to use of force anywhere but felt that the United Nations should be the proper forum for a political settlement of the issue.

Highlighting the serious economic repercussions for India in wake of hike in oil prices, the prime minister said a one dollar increase would cost the country Rs four billion in foreign exchange.
