NEW DELHI: V.P. Singh on Friday received without opposition, a vote of confidence from M.PS belonging to the ruling National Front, including Devi Lal setting at rest speculation that the dismissed deputy might challenge Singh’s leadership.

An emergency meeting of the National Front parliamentary party here, attended by 205 of 212 members, adopted a resolution “reaffirming its faith and confidence” in the leadership of Mr Singh.

Devi Lal said there was no question of lack of faith in Singh’s leadership. Therefore, there was no need for the resolution, he added

The letter, later established to be forged, raised a political storm in the government and led to the dismissal of Devi Lal.

Justifying the resolution, parliamentary party general secretary Ajay Singh said some senior leaders felt that in the wake of recent developments some message should be sent to the nation that the national front was unitedly behind the prime minister.
