NEW DELHI: The people’s Union of Civil Liberties has strongly denounced the charge sheet implicating two human rights activists in a “conspiracy” to assassinate late prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Professor Jagmohan Singh and Professor Dalip Singh were charged as coconspirators in the alleged assassination conspiracy along with the United Akali Dal leader and former inspector general of police Simiranjit Singh Mann as well as All India Sikh Student Federation leader Atinder Pal Singh.

The PUCL press release says that Professor Jagmohan Singh and Dalip Singh are human rights activists.

The Anant Ram Investigation report had originally said that Balbir Singh was involved as a go between but he was acquitted by the Supreme Court in the original case, when it found evidence against him had been fabricated.

Now Kehar Singh, who has been hanged and therefore can’t defend himself, has been named as. a “conspirator”.

The release says that by involving Kehar Singh, the government also wants to reinforce the case against him because his hanging was widely seen as that of as innocent man, and thus condemned.

It is an afterthought story and a politics of convenience, the press release said.
