CHANDIGARH: Important leaders of Akali Dal-B and Mann group who were silent in the wake of the killing of Balwant Singh not only attended his bhog ceremony held here at the weekend but also euologised him as a great economist whose memory should be Perpetuated by setting up a trust.
Leading the Akalis at the function SGPC Chief G.S. Tohra, said his organisation would donate money for the proposed trust. Tohra asked the center to wake up from its deathlike slumber and initiate steps to solve the Punjab problem.
Tohra regretted that Delhi had remained indifferent to the plight, hopes and aspirations of the Sikhs over the past 43 years despite ‘warnings, plea and representations by Sikh leaders with the result that the Sikh youth had taken up arms and had started killing the Delhi rulers and us. The SGPC chief said, Balwant Singh’s killing had moved people away from Khalistan. Parkash Singh Badal said the center should go into the root cause of the militancy which had gripped Punjab. He paid tributes to the memory of Balwant Singh and said his death had caused a big loss to the party and Punjab.
Punjab Governor Virinder Verma paying tributes said the death had caused a big setback to Punjab. He exhorted Balwant’s son to follow in the footsteps of his fathers.
Foreign Minister IK Gujral, minister of state for home SK Sahai, Surjeet Singh Minhas, speaker Punjab Assembly was among those who paid homage to Balwant Singh.
