GUWAHATI: Life came to a standstill in Assam as the 12 hour general strike called by the ruling Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Wednesday.
The strike has been called to protest against lack of satisfactory Response by the center to various demands of the state.
Vehicular traffic went off the roads and air, train and streamer services were suspended. Government offices, banks, private companies, educational institutions, shops and bazaars were closed.
There was no report of any untoward incidents.
Essential services have been exempted from the purview of the strike.
The main demands of the AGP, include stalling the center’s move to pump out crude oil from Assam, setting up of a refinery at Numaligharh, installation of a gas cracker unit, provision for a railway division at Rangiya, construction of a bridge over the Bogibeel and also embankments at Dehand and Subansiri and extension of the broad gauge line from Guwahati to Tinsukhia and Karimganj.
