CHANDIGARH: The govt of India has geared its administrative and political machinery to hold Punjab assembly elections before November 10 this year. Despite Governor Verma’s protestations of starting with a clean slate, the fact remains the Parkash Singh Badal is being projected by Delhi as the best bet for Punjab. Badal along with Rajdev Singh Barnala and Kirpal Singh MPs met prime minister VP Singh in Delhi to discuss measures preparatory to elections such as giving employment to Sikh army “deserters” during Blue star in 1984 and some financial relief to victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide in Delhi and elsewhere. In this manner all those with potential to oppose Akalis and pro center elements are sought to be silenced or neutralised. An offer to Harinder Khalsa of an SGPC post and the appointment of Bhai Ranjit Singh as Jathdar Akal Takht are also viewed in this contest. Indications are center Akali relations are sought to be sorted out by Badal and GS Tohra. Those roped into the exercise are a few Akali Dal (M) elements also. They are being encouraged to meet the new governor. Verma a 74 year old law graduate has held several ministerial assignments during his 42 year old political career.
