Two people were killed and another was critically injured when their car hit the side of a freight train Saturday night on Davis Road southwest of Lodi.
Lodi residents Janak Singh Nijjar, 59, and his wife Gurbachan Kaur Nijjar 57, were both killed when the northbound car broke through a Davis Road crossing guard, north of Eight Mile Road, at about 9:30 pm and struck the side of the southbound Union Pacific train. The driver of the American Motors Concord Sedan was their son, Stockton resident Kamaljit Nijjar, 27, who was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stockton. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital Monday evening. The train was traveling at about35 mph, according to the CHP.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, the CHP said.
