CHANDIGARH: A group of gunmen in police uniform on Wednesday night shot dead eight persons and injured about 13 others at village Talwandi Bhai in Ferozepur district, increasing the toll in Punjab state to 5 6 since Tuesday night.

According to police sources in Jalandhar, six persons, including a girl, died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The gunmen who were armed. With automatic weapons, had come in a jeep and escaped after the shooting.

Police have cordoned off the area. The injured were admitted to nearby hospitals, the sources said.

Six gunmen were killed in an encounter near Kala Bakra in Jalandhar district on Wednesday, police said here, adding that some. Arms and ammunition were seized from the spot.
