NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court adjourned till July 12, hearing on a petition by Balbir Singh seeking damages of about Rs 5.2 million for malicious prosecution in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The adjournment was granted as the counsel for Balbir Singh could not appear before the court.
The suit, filed in August 1989, seeks to claim damages for malicious prosecution and victimization of Balbir Singh who remained incarcerating in the death cell for about four years without any reasonable cause.
Balbir charged with conspiracy to kill the former prime minister ‘was sentenced to death along with Satwant Singh who assassinated Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, and Kehar Singh, a conspirator by a session’s court on January. 22, 1986.
The Delhi high court confirmed the sentence in December 1986. Balbir was acquitted by the Supreme Court on August 3, 1988.
