NEW DELHI: India has impressed upon Pakistan that it is still not too late to withdraw from “Adventist brinkmanship” in relation to Jammu and Kashmir which might generate unpredictable and uncontrollable events.
Making a suomoto statement in Lok Sabha Wednesday on his recent talks with Pakistan Foreign Minister Yaqub Khan, External Affairs Minister IK Gujral said India was watching the situation and keeping the communication Channels open.
If Pakistan gave concrete evidence on the ground of applying restraint, this could pave the way for improvement of bilateral relations, he said.
Gujral stressed that while India wanted peace, it would not tolerate infringements of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Rejecting Yaqub Khan’s suggestion for inviting United Nations or any outside agency to provide a neutral surveillance mechanism, Gujral said this was neither helpful nor feasible.
“He should know that no International Agency could effectively monitor clandestine assistance to militants,” Gujral said.
