MOSCOW: The Soviet Union Friday expressed concern and anxiety over the growing tension between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.
The USSR is confident that an escalation of tension meets the interests of neither India nor Pakistan, foreign ministry spokesman Yuri Gremitskikh said at a briefing.
He said urgent and energetic efforts should be made to relieve the conflict through a peaceful and political dialogue on the basis of 1972 Shimla agreement.
The Soviet government regrets the acts of violence and human losses, Gremiskish said, adding it was hoped that the parties to the conflict would display sense and restraint and prevent tension from escalating.
