The police in Srinagar said tens of thousands of people were defying a curfew and taking part in the funeral of Ashfaq Majid, who was identified as one of four area commanders of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, the main group campaigning for separation from India.
‘A spokesman for the Indian Government said Mr, Majid and others attacked a security patrol early this morning and that he died when a hand grenade exploded in his hand as he was about to throw it at the troops.
Supporters of Mr. Majid have pledged to avenge his death, and a senior official here acknowledged a threat to senior Indian Government officials and Hindus in Kashmir.

In the other incident, a spokesman, Rammohan Rao, said, 10 Kashmiris were killed by Indian troops on Thursday night when they fired on a group seeking to cross into Pakistani controlled Kashmir.
The official said that about 12 others were captured and that search operations were continuing in the Kupwara District.
