JAMMU: Landslides, avalanches and heavy rains during the past week in Jammu and Kashmir have claimed 43 lives as thousands of people were being evacuated to safer places from the banks of rivers Chenab and Jhelum in the state.

Eight people have been reported killed in the rains and flash floods in Jammu’s Doda district in the past two days.

Doda deputy commissioner said the situation in the area was “‘serious” as the district was completely cut off from the rest of the country because of blockades at connecting roads. Meanwhile authorities are making efforts to drop relief packets in the area by helicopter but poor weather conditions have hampered up operation, official’s sources here said.
