NEW DELHI: The government decided to issue identity cards in border areas in Punjab to detect illegal migrants and launch combing operations against militants in the border districts.
These steps were among the measures decided at a high level meeting here to contain the situation in the state in the wake of spurt of violence there in recent days,
The high level meeting was convened by principal secretary to the Prime Minister B.G. Deshmukh.
The other steps considered to firmly deal with the situation were forming of self-defense groups of villagers and citizens in urban areas so that they may be given arms and training, forming of selected teams of security forces to keep the militants on the run and measures to further strengthen the morale of the police force in the state.
