SAN FRANCISCO: S. Ajit Pal Singh Sandhu, M.D has been nominated to the State of California, Commission for Economic Development’s Advisory Council on Asia.

At a glittery function here, Dr. Ajit Pal Singh was officially inducted into the council by Mr, Leo McCarthy, and the Lt Governor of California on Friday, March 23, at the Holiday Inn.

The Sikh community hailed the nomination of Dr. Sandhu. He is the first person from the sub-continent to be on the council.

Dr. Ajit Pal Singh was born in Punjab on April 6, 1948. He graduated from the Government Medical College, Patiala, and Punjab in 1974. He came to the US in 1976 and completed his internship, residency and fellowship. He has a private practice since 1982 in internal and pulmonary medicine in Fremont CA,

He is also affiliated to the St. Rose Hospital in Hayward and the Washington Hospital in Fremont.

He is married to Dr. Surinder Sandhu an anesthesiologist who was there at the function to applaud her husband. They have two children Simran and Herman aged 10 and seven.

Dr. Ajit Pal Singh creates time to run a free medical clinic for the poor at the Gurdwara in Fremont.

At the press conference this Correspondent asked Mr. Leo McCarthy as to what the economic aid policy on India is to be given its poor human rights record. The Lt Governor said that Dr. Sandhu will be consulted on all policy matters relating to India.

Mr. Darshan Singh chairman Parking Authority of San Francisco who was among the guests said it was big step for the community.

The Council

The Advisory Council on Asia was created in 1986 and is a permanent committee of the California Commission for Economic Development. It is charged with the responsibility of examining and recommending specific policy positions concerning California’s economic relationship with Asia. Based upon the Advisory Council’s recommendations the Commission may issue various reports, which shall provide both official policies and guidelines to public and private sectors regarding future economic relations with Asian countries.

The various reports to be issued by the Advisory Council on Asia will be widely disseminated to a broad spectrum of influential leaders in both the public and private sectors, and the various state agencies concerned with these developments.
