NEW DELHI: At least two people on March 17 were killed and 15 injured when police opened fire to quell a mob in Nizamuddin area of South Delhi.

Police said the mob was protesting against the alleged burning down of some huts near the Nizammudin cremation ground by a section of one community.

Police said they resorted to firing after tear gassing and cane charge “failed to control the mob, which went on a rampage.”

The situation is tense but under control,” a senior police officer said.

Earlier in the day, Hindus and Muslims had clashed over encroachment of a portion of the cremation ground by members of a community.
