NEW DELHI: The opposition Congress (I) Friday said it would align with a “like minded section” of the ruling Janata Dal to ensure that “‘communal forces like the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena, do not come to power in any state in the coming assembly elections.”

The announcement was made by the party general secretary, K.N. Singh.

Singh told reporters that the thrust of his Party was to defeat communal and criminal forces in the polls by attempting to unite with “like minded parties.”

In some states the Janata Dal was also a like-minded party, he said,

To a query as to whether his party viewed the prime minister, V.P. Singh, as a like-minded person, he said: “He is a most confused man”.

Asked whether his announcement was meant to break the alliance between the Janata Dal and the BJP in some states, Singh said it was the consistent policy of his party to defeat communal forces like the pro Hindu BJP, Shiy Sena and the RSS.

On the poll prospects of the Congress, Singh said that the party had received “very encouraging” reports from the states going to the polls.
