DES MOINES: Congressman Tom Tauki assured Iowan Sikhs of his continued support for the Sikh cause. This was revealed by a delegation of Sikhs who participated in a special fund raising function hosted for upcoming election of Mr. Tom Tauki, who is pitted against incumbent Tom Harkin in the senatorial race. He also said that if elected he will continue to support Sikh cause on the senate floor.
Hon Tauki has in the past expressed his concern regarding continued human right violations of Indian Govt against Sikhs. In July of 1989, he voted in favor of an amendment to congressional bill (H.R 1067) introduced by Congressman Wally Herger, emphasizing end to repression of Indian Sikhs. The amendment though narrowly defeated sent strong signals to Indian Govt regarding concerns of American lawmakers.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Satpal Singh, a business magnate and recently elected president of Des Moines based Sikh American Heritage Foundation along with his colleagues, pledged to rally support for Republican candidates during upcoming elections.
Senator R Charles Grassley (R) and President Bush were the keynote speakers.
Later, Senator Grassley held a brief meeting with the Sikh delegates. During the meeting the Senator shared his knowledge about Indians human rights violations and promised to look into this issue more carefully.
Lowa’s Sikh American Heritage Foundation, a parent Sikh body, was established in 1988 to champion the cause of Sikhs in the state.
