The removal of Karan Singh from the US ambassadorship was an intelligent first step in the undoing of Rajiv Gandhi’s malicious and calculated move to bring the Sikhs a bad name. This was in consonance with the attempt to brand Sikhs as “terrorists” not only in India but worldwide. YP Singh and Gujral would do well to study the shocking revelations in the book “Soft Target”. The nefarious activities of Research and Analysis Wing agents in US and (Canada are now an open secret. All Sikh, Muslim and Dalit organizations are aware that Indian Govt agents are at work within their ranks. It is now known that one Rajinder Kumar was an Indian agent out to malign Sikhs in California.

The new ambassador in the interest of fairness and justice, which has so far been prominent by its absence in Indian Govt operations in North America, must ensure that the consulates are cleared of intelligence agents. The moles in Sikh and Muslim organizations must be made public forthwith. If the VP Singh Govt is sincere and not just pushing nice sounding phrases like “healing touch”, a reapproachment may be brought about by immediate action.

The damage done by P.K. Kaul and then by Karan Singh has been enormous. That was their brief. What will the new envoy’s brief be?

The Sikhs are at the end of their patience. They have tolerated the nonsense of broken promises and abominable attacks for 42 years. It would be foolhardy of Delhi to even try to fool a very angry Sikh nation again. The damage has to be undone and quickly.

A new ambassador in conjunction with the promise of the clean government which VP Singh says he wants to preside over, should: Dismantle RAW like most eastern European countries have done away with their secret services.

‘Stop the practice of using denial of passports and visas as means to control the social and political activities of the Sikhs abroad, including US citizens.

Stop the practice of denying the facts when questioned by Congressmen about the human rights violations of the Sikhs in the Punjab and help in allowing Amnesty International to investigate these violations.

Stop the use of agents and agent provocateurs to meddle in Sikh affairs and the stop the practice of maintaining black lists of community activists.

Ask the Justice Department to ban the entry of those who were indicted by human rights organizations as bearing the prime responsibility of the Delhi carnage, especially former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his former Cabinet Ministers H.K.L Bhagat and Jagdish Tytler into United States, just as the Austrian President Kurt Waldheim was.

He should stop the practice of government propping up the ethnic media for propaganda purposes and hiring US firms for propaganda against the Sikhs, Kashmiri Muslims and other minorities. Papers like Sache Padshah Forum of Canada which is bandying about false Gurmat and is mailed without an address in New York must be stopped.
