CINCINNATI, Reuter: Kay Yow, who overcame breast cancer to coach the U.S. Women’s Basketball team to the Olympic Gold Medal in Seoul, was inducted into the women’s sports hall of fame on Friday.
Yow guided, U.S.S. Teams to 21 victories in 22intemational games during her tenure as national coach, including three consecutive wins over the once-dominant Soviet Union,
Yow has a U.S, College coaching record of 348-124, including a 291-105 mark at North Carolina State University where she has coached for 14 seasons.
The 46 year old Yow served as an assistant coach for the gold medal winning 1984 U.S. Olympic Women’s team before becoming head coach and directing the United States to gold in the 1986 goodwill games and World Championships in Moscow.
Twice the 1986 squad defeated the Soviet National team, becoming the first US team in 29 years to beat the Soviet Women in major competition.
In the summer of 1987 Yow was diagnosed as having breast cancer and successfully underwent 2 modified radical mastectomy before returning to coaching.
