BOMBAY: New Zealand Captain /John Wright became the highest run scorer in New Zealand Test Cricket history on Thursday on the opening day of the second test against India.
Opener Wright reached the landmark during a deceptively bright start by his side at the Wankhede stadium, the New Zealanders slipping to 72 for three by lunch:
‘Wright, playing his 60th test, passed Bevan Congdon’s record of 3,448 runs in 61 tests when he drove pace-man Kapil Dev to the boundary for his fifth four to goto27.
But he managed to add only another six runs before misreading Leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani’s googly and was caught behind.
‘The New Zealand Captain, having won the toss, put on 36 in 12 overs for the first wicket with Trevor Franklin, who was then stumped as he went down the wicket to off-spinner Arshad Ayub. Franklin hit four boundaries in his 18.
The out-of-form Andrew Jones did not last long, scoring only three before padding up to Kapil and being adjudged LBW to a ball that cut back.
India won the first match in the three-test series by 172 runs,
