KARACHI, PAKISTAN, Aug. 24, Reuter: Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been given armed guards following the suspected assassination of President Mohammad ZiaulHaq, police said on Wednesday.
They knew of no specific threat to the leader of the Pakistan people’s party (PPP) but said the four guards were assigned as “a security precaution.”
Bhutto’s movements were not restricted, they said.
Butto, in an interview on Tuesday evening, would not talk about fears for her life, saying, “It is all in God’s hands.”
Aides say she was frequently receiving anonymous threats since returning in April 1986 from self-imposed exile in Europe.
The most serious incident happened two days after her return when an armed intruder got into her Lahore home but was overpowered.
Since Zia was killed in an air crash last Wednesday, some patricians have accused PPP Activists of celebrating his death by distributing sweets and dancing on the streets.
Bhutto’s father, Zulkikar Ali Butto, was deposed ‘by Zia in 1977 and later hanged for conspiring to murder a political foe.
